The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has added AFINITOR to the NCCN Guidelines for Kidney Cancer as a recommended treatment for patients with renal cell carcinoma whose disease has progressed after treatment with kinase inhibitors. According to NCCN Guidelines AFINITOR is the first and only Category 1 treatment option after initial VEGF TKI failure.1

The European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines on renal cell carcinoma endorse AFINITOR as the only grade A treatment for second-line therapy after failure of a VEGF-targeted therapy.2
The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) group opinion on metastatic renal cell carcinoma recommends AFINITOR for patients whose disease has progressed on a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.3
The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) working group, in their clinical recommendations for treatment of renal cell carcinoma, granted AFINITOR a recommendation for use in patients after progression on a VEGF TKI. AFINITOR use in this patient population was named “standard” by the committee, with no recommendation for any other option.4
